World Environment Day, June 5

The world celebrates every 5th June as World Environment Day. Politicians, especially when in opposition raise the voice against environmental pollution and degradation but there has been no noticeable improvement in the overall world. Developed countries have utilized maximum resources available without any care towards the nature beyond the carrying capacity of the Earth. Developed countries and the rapidly developing countries have been been emitting carbon at a very high rate. Nevertheless, a few countries in the Europe and the Middle East have practiced the ways for conservation of nature and have put forward the best eco-friendly, sustainable and green development models. Factories are powered by green sources of energy such as hydropower and solar. Homes and vehicles are as well. Even there have been practices of building new ecosystems with zero carbon emission. One among the countries to implement such urban ecosystem is United Arab Emirates.

Let’s fight for clean air!

There is no planet B

This year the theme of the WED is air pollution.
The air pollution we breathe in doesn’t just impact our health, it impacts our climate’s health, too. The main pollutants are black carbon, ground-level ozone and methane and they cause deaths for: lung cancer, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), stroke, heart diseases and at the same time they are a threat for the planet causing rising temperatures, snow and ice melt etc…
So what we can do?
-Manage waste: recycle non-organic trash, reuse grocery bags and dispose of remaining trash by local collection.
-Cook and heat clean: burning coal and biomass (wood) contributes to indoor air pollution when used for cooking and outdoor air pollution when used for heating
-Use public transport, cycling or walking to get around.
-Turn off lights and electronics not in use.

If you have time, have a look at what WHO says on impacts of air pollution!
